Ten Great Roadrunner Guitarists

Roadrunner Records released their pick of Ten Great Roadrunner Guitarists and guess which of my faves made the list?  Mark DiVito of Vanquish?  Yeah, I wish...

Seriously though, Dave Mustaine of Megadeth made the list.  With two albums (United Abominations and Endgame) to boot for RR Records, Dave keeps turning tricks on those strings like only one of the most talented guitarists in the world can do.  Check out the rest of the list at the Roadrunner Records website.  I'm sure you metalheads out there will find one of your faves on that list!

I would like to...

For Top Sites Tuesday this week, BlogDumps is giving us all something to think about.  This time, we've got some sentences to finish.  Now that is definitely something to think about!

I picked this sentence to finish: I would like to

Hmm...what would a dreamer like Liggy like to see?  Aha!  I would like to see my favorite local metal band VANQUISH get back together for a big comeback performance.  In reality, it's not likely gonna happen anytime soon.  Their guitarist, Mark DiVito, is currently in Illinois working on an Engineering degree.  Their lead singer, Greer Cawthon, is busy performing with his new cover band Excess Baggage (which by the way, has a really busy schedule).  Anthony Maiden, their mega-awesome drummer, has become engaged and recently moved into his new home.  Ah, maybe it'll be time to start a family soon for Anthony?  And Nick Johnson, the band's bass player, had parted ways with the band last year, pursuing other music-related endeavors, including an advanced music degree.

Check out their original music!

Keep it metal with Vanquish

At least for now I have their CDs to listen to and enjoy.  Maybe someday, someone from a major recording studio will come across their music and make them an offer they can't refuse!

On a more personal note, I would like to thank everyone who comes by my blog, reads a post or two, and drops me a comment every once in awhile.  And thanks to all who have helped me make it to #1 on Top Sites Tuesday in the past.  As a prize, I got this neat shirt which often gets a lot of conversations going whenever I wear it.  (Thanks again!!!)

Two Thoughts on a Tuesday

So I'm gonna put on my thinking cap and write about two thoughts I have for Tuesday...yes, it's Top Sites Tuesday again at BlogDumps!

My first thought is how saying good-bye to 2009 also meant saying good-bye to my favorite local metal band, Vanquish. This was kind of sad for many of their fans like me because they just finally completed their 2nd CD (Beyond Desolation) and were getting ready to push forward. However, they lost their bassist, Nick Johnson, earlier in the year. He's pursuing advanced music studies and seeking acceptance into a prestigious music program at NYU. The band had to perform most of their 2009 shows with a substitute bassist, Brian Berry (who was already familiar with Vanquish music because he played with the band in the past).

Mark DiVito, one of the founding members and guitarist, also decided to leave the band to further his educational goals beyond his bachelor's degree in another state. That left only Greer Cawthon (the band's lead singer) and Anthony Maiden (the band's drummer) in the band. These guys have been the best of friends throughout their musical careers and finding a suitable replacement for half the band just wasn't something they wanted to do at this time. So Vanquish bid farewell to their fans with a final show on December 12, 2009. (Sigh!)

My second thought is about how as 2010 came around, so did some other friends of mine in another local band. My friends from Shed54 decided to bring their band together again and have even added a new guitarist to their lineup (making them now a two-guitar band). Shed's new lineup include: THAI CHAU (T-BONER) on Suhr Custom Guitars, SEAN FERGUSON (FERG) on Ibanez and ESP Guitars, KEN BAILEY (THE UNIT) on Vocals, SCOTT STEWART on Tama Percussion, and GREG HAYES (OG-The Original Gregster) on Ibanez Low End Bass Guitar. The band is excited to get started again and have a show already scheduled in Virginia Beach's The Half Shell on January 29th.

So as I say good-bye to some fun musical outings and Internet promoting of one of my favorite bands - Vanquish - I say welcome back to another set of talented musicians I know from around here - Shed54.

Here's a taste of the old Shed54 (from 2006's locally popular demo). It's the song "Control" which we local music fans got to enjoy over the airwaves for a little bit. For some reason this was a popular hit with the ladies...hmmm?

See how the ladies wanna come up close to Ken, Shed54's lead singer?

Beyond Desolation by Vanquish

As I mentioned in a previous blog entry, my favorite local heavy metal band "Vanquish" started recording a CD in early 2008 and finally got it ready for release just recently. I attended their CD Release Party at Buddas Place in Newport News, Virginia this past Saturday and picked up a copy of the new album.

Vanquish
Cool capture of new lighting effects on Mark Divito onstage at Buddas Place (the Peninsula's Premier Venue for Rock and Metal Music)

The new album is heavier, deeper, and more mature sounding than their first album, Nine Deadly Sins. Okay, I know that's not much of a description of the album. I'm not really much of a music reviewer because I really tend to just listen to music and judge it from the overall feeling I get while listening to it. When I listen to this new Vanquish album, I hear a strong emphasis on percussions and bass, moreso than on their original album. I like the way it sounds when I play it loud in my car on the way to work.

The album tracks are as follows:
1. Facing the Darkness
2. Blood in Me
3. 12:08
4. Through Every Word
5. Concealing the Pain
6. Memories of You
7. Pretentious
8. Sorrow's Manifest
9. Wages of Sin
10. Lost Cause

Here's a sample track from the new Vanquish album. It's called "Blood In Me."

If you want to hear more or want to get a copy of the album, please contact the band directly through their myspace page: www.myspace.com/vanquishband.

Vanquish band update

Beyond Desolation
At long last, the CD that my favorite local metal band, Vanquish, started recording in 2008 is ready for release. They will be debuting the new CD to local fans and rock music supporters at the premier metal and rock music venue on the Hampton Roads Peninsula - Buddas Place - on October 24th. It will also be available at future shows and through local Virginia music stores. If you're interested in ordering the CD directly from the band, please contact them through their MySpace page.

I don't have the track listings for the album yet but two of the songs from the new album have been publicly available on their MySpace page music player. The two tracks are Lost Cause and Facing the Darkness. I put them on this music player to allow my readers around the world have an opportunity to hear them. As a bonus, I added Sinister (from their first CD titled Nine Deadly Sins) because it was quite popular locally and received local radio airplay as well.

I also designed a new banner to help promote the new CD on MySpace as part of my dedication to the Vanquish Fan Graphics site. Check it out below. Feel free to copy it, too, if you like Vanquish's metal music and want to share the love like I do!

Vanquish at the National

May 2nd marked the last live show for a Richmond-based band called Separation. The Separation band members are close friends of my favorite local musicians, Vanquish so it was no surprise that Vanquish was one of the bands to open the show for them. I put together some awesome pictures taken by photographer (and fellow Vanquish fan) Dylan Patterson. With his Canon Rebel XS Digital SLR Camera, Dylan was able to capture a lot of great shots that my older model Sony Cybershot just can't quite do. (I'm hoping to be able to upgrade to a digital SLR model later this year but since I'm focused on my art and writing at this time, my photography ambitions can wait...)

Anyway, I used Scrapblog to make the following collages. Scrapblog is a fun (and free) way to put together scrapbook-like pages for your pictures. It even provides you with all the templates and add-ons you can imagine. You can even customize the premade layouts! My sister, Ophelia, introduced me to the free web-based service a couple of years ago. (Thank you, Ophelia!)

VanquishFanGraphics™ worships guitarist, Mark DiVito. He gets a scrapblog page of his own!

For more pictures and Vanquish graphics, please visit the VanquishFanGraphics™ Myspace Page. To learn more about Vanquish and hear their music, check out the Official Vanquish Band Myspace Page.

...and by the way, rock on!!!

Sneak Peek at Vanquish's Upcoming Album

Vanquish

My favorite local band from Richmond/Hampton Roads, Virginia is Vanquish. I mentioned them in one of my earlier posts and post updates as I can. I manage a fan page on myspace dedicated to promoting this awesome metal band. The page promotes other local musicians and other bands I like as well but mainly, it's there because I wanted to bring more exposure to this talented group of musicians.

The band has been working hard for over a year now on putting together their second album and will soon be releasing the album. They've uploaded two tracks from the new album on their official myspace page so their fans can get a preview and give them some feedback. One of the songs they posted is Lost Cause, which you can listen to (the demo version) and watch them perform in this video clip my sister took for me during one of their NorVA performances. I uploaded it to my YouTube page, along with a few other videos I have of them from their shows.

I figure I ought to post some of the collages I put together of the band members to introduce my readers to the band members. (After all, I am a Photoshop artist myself).

Please be sure to visit the band's myspace page and listen to their music! If you're a myspace user, please be sure to add them to your favorite band friends, too. And don't forget to check out the gydget I created for metal music lovers like myself. I have the narrow version displayed on the right hand column of this blog.

Necare

Necare
Here's some trivia about a member of my favorite local heavy metal band, Vanquish. Greer Cawthon, their lead singer and keyboard player, played drums, keyboard, and guitar in a doom metal band called Necare.
Necare (pronounced "neh KA reh") released an album through a record label from Finland called Firebox Records some years ago. If you google the band's name, you'll actually still be able to find the album for sale through several outlets, including amazon. While this band is actually no longer playing or recording together, the album they released continues to gain attention around the world for its remarkable contribution to this type of music.

Necare

These are the tracks from that album:
1. Stillborn Twilight
2. Rite of Shrouds
3. Desire (The Dawn & The Chrysalis)
4. Canto XXXIV
5. Ruin
6. Celia
7. Gethsemane
8. Waters of Quiet
9. Touching Eternity

Readers who might not be familiar with doom metal must be wondering what exactly is doom metal? Metal music, after all, has so many classifications and in my opinion, not all of them accurately describe the music at all. After listening to Necare today, all I can say is that if you like gothic music (not to be mistaken with that screaming out your blood and guts kind of stuff), then you will enjoy listening to the almost hypnotic yet haunting melodies of Necare. As defined in wikipedia, doom metal "typically employs very slow tempos, low-tuned guitars and a much 'thicker' or 'heavier' sound than other metal genres. Both the music and the lyrics intend to evoke a sense of despair, dread, and impending doom."

This is the description of Necare's music that I read in their biography:
Necare's sound can be best described as atavistic: they craft a raw, melodic soundscape eerily reminiscent of three early '90s UK doom/death bands (Anathema, My Dying Bride, Paradise Lost) that were influential to so many - while adding to the mix a substantial dose of tranquil atmosphere.

If you want to see what music critics and reviewers mean about the lyrics of doom metal songs, take a look at the lyrics of Necare's title track from the signed album RUIN:

Ruin

Falling, sightless, the final hours have passed.
The soul becomes flightless.
The silence of the grave, the evensong.
Bereft of form and void.
Deadlights dance in the séance obscure.
And the damned lick the black tendrils of hastur.
Conjoined amidst the circles nine.
The prophecy of the soil and secret rites of the worm.
An ossuary of flesh amongst all our living tombs.
Crawling, limbless, through the pale valleys displaced of time.
Our lidless eyes forward to the ever-fixed mark.
This worm-web known as mortality.
A single, labyrinthine tier across the yawning abyss.
Whose walls are featureless and purchase - impossible.
And so begins the litany of the lie.
Scraping the precipice toward the slough of despond.
I have found strange purity in this oblivion.
Impending dissolution brings no pause.
Upon ashen splinters is my body - which is given for you.
I call the vermin to their feast, and the worms to paradise.

Then go to their myspace page and listen to their music. I assure you, you will not be disappointed.

Vanquish Rules!

I will never get tired of this band - Vanquish! My friends and family went out to support them at the Battle of the Bands (round one) at Alley Katz in Richmond, Virginia on Sunday, July 27th and had an amazing time. For this competition, it was whoever had the loudest crowd wins. Vanquish tied for first place with another band called Colorful Schematic (I think that's their name but I can't be sure). In any case, I believe that if you had a team of professional judges and scored points for their music, showmanship, talent, originality, and energy, there's no doubt that Vanquish would have garnered first place by themselves.

I thought I'd post a slideshow of pics taken by the various fans that came to support Vanquish at this event. Trust me, every dollar you spend going to a Vanquish performance, no matter where it's at, is always a dollar worth spending.

Week-end's coming up!

Vanquish Rules!

I have a ton of new pictures of my favorite local metal band, Vanquish, and have not yet made any new graphics with them, which I normally do for the fan page that I run. So last night, in a moment of boredom, I played with Mark DiVito's image and came up with this. Since the week-end is coming up, I thought I might as well post it here on my blog.

Have a great week-end, everyone!!!

Vanquish Comeback Show

I blogged about an upcoming show that I was all excited about last week. Well, I went there and had a great time at the Vanquish Comeback Show last Friday, May 23rd, at Buddas Place in Newport News, Virginia. This was their first show back after recording their second album. The new album hasn't been released yet. According to Anthony, their drummer, some tracks still needs some mixing done and a few other finishing touches. I can't wait to hear the next album. I bought my friends copies of the first album because I thought it was worth sharing. Yes, I love this band and I tell everyone that!!!

Back to the show...I took a bunch of pictures and a few video clips of their performance so I could relive the moment. It wasn't a major concert, but it was definitely a fun show which a lot of people attended. We were surprised by the crowd that was there on a Friday night. They were all ready to rock!

Here's a clip from the show that I uploaded on google videos. I thought I'd share it so more people can hear Vanquish...enjoy!

And here are a few stills from the show...these guys are just awesome!!!

By the way, more videos of past Vanquish shows and performances can be found on the band's myspace page and on google videos (posted by videos another music lover in Hampton Roads).

I'm so excited!

Well, my most favorite local band, Vanquish, got done recording their second album recently and are set to start playing on the local music circuit again this week. They have a show scheduled this coming Friday at Buddas Place, the Virginia Peninsula's premiere metal venue.

As my excitement for their upcoming show builds, I thought I'd post a video of them playing live at the Norva in January 2007. The video was filmed by my sister, Veronica. This is their big hit "Sinister" featuring their lead singer, Greer Cawthon, on keyboards.

This is the banner I created in 2006 to support the band's first album, Nine Deadly Sins. This was one of my earliest attempts at creating an animated gif.

The album is available at select music retailers throughout the Hampton Roads area, including the Fantasy store on Jefferson Ave. in Newport News, as well as from the band at their shows. There may be limited copies left so if you're interested in their music, you need to act fast!

A little history about my rock and rollin' days...

When I lived in Hawaii in the early 1990s, there was a heavy metal band called Open Fire that I used to love to see. I followed them to their local shows as often as I could.  They're no longer playing together but they were really fun to see. Since then I have moved to other states, gotten married, started a family, and just never had the time to see other bands play live.

Before I left Hawaii, I did get the exciting opportunity to have a picture taken with their bass player, Jack Azevedo. Here's that picture:

I even had that picture put on a shirt and had him sign it.  I wonder where that shirt went.  Anyway, about two years ago, I started going out to see live local bands play again and found a really awesome metal band out of Williamsburg, Virginia. They call themselves Vanquish.  I didn't think I'd ever find another talented local metal band after Open Fire.

I've seen a lot of other really talented local bands here in the Hampton Roads area of Virginia but I'll have to share pictures about them later. This blog post is getting to be longer than I wanted it to be. I will probably end up boring my readers.
