Two Thoughts on Tuesday

I opened up my web browser to check my Yahoo! news page and this is what I see in the report about the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico:

The first thought I had was "What does this have to do with the oil spill?"  Well, the caption on the picture indicates that this is a photograph of a fisherman holding an oil-stained buoy.  Well, my goodness!  I didn't realize fishermen were so lean and tan like that!  LOL!  No offense to fishermen, but I kinda always pictured them to be somewhat older-looking guys, perhaps bearded and ragged, wearing overalls and galoshes.  Think of George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg in the movie "The Perfect Storm" and you'll know what I mean.

My second thought is that I hope the oil spill in the gulf gets contained and cleaned up real soon.  It seems like a monumental task considering how hard it is just cleaning off the cooking oil I spill on my stove top sometimes.  But when I'm not "dreaming" about music and art, I think a lot about the animals - especially the wildlife whose lives are affected by the selfish things we do as humans.  Sadly, we've destroyed a lot of their natural habitats so that we could build our own establishments, procure fancy novelty items, and provide means for our own survival.  Yet instead of finding ways to establish our living with nature intact, we've destroyed a lot of it.  I wonder why?  It's tough...but I just hate to see the helpless creatures suffer because of the things we do that could otherwise be prevented.

Boy do I agree with you, we as people who can reason and think should be much kinder to our environment than we are. I am one of those ..... environmentalists, yes it is true. I have worked with green peace and many other groups to shut down toxic waste dumps all over California. I am all for cleaning up the environment and giving our beautiful animals room to live that we share with them and not take it over sending them packing. The animals have a right to live here too. Oh don't get me started.

That was a good post Liggy, I hope they get this mess cleaned up soon but it is definitely a big mess this time. I think it will be some time before it is totally clean again. AngelBaby is right we should learn to be nicer to our environment!

The oils disaster in the Gulf is a true Tragedy. Not only are the animals and habitats going to be destroyed, but so are the lives of many people.

The clean-up effort is gong to take years. If the wells were capped today we would still have a ton of work ahead of us, but the wells are still pumping oils out into the Gulf and there's nothing we can really do about it but hope that someone out there can come up with a viable plan and act fast on it.

It is sad to realize that our hunger for oil and carelessness about how we get it caused this.

The biggest shame is how many people will say they care but do nothing about it.

Nothing like a little fisherman skin to raise a young lady's political consciousness!! In all seriousness, I think the issue with the environment is, as it is with so many other things, balance. We all seem so polarized. People in power either want oil at all costs or they want to shut it down. They want to save every little nit threatened with extinction or they say "they're just animals." They're Rush Limbaugh or Keith Obermann. Our national common sense lies in the Middle and no one's listening. Great post, Liggy.

Thanks for your comments...yes, I sure wish there was a happy medium we could all agree on to make this Earth's resources and wildlife last for generations and generations to come. I agree with Bud - our society's so polarized and it's unfortunate that it makes it difficult to come to agreement on how to save our world.

That's funny about fisherman. I was thinking that had to be a model holding that buoy.

Yes, what a mess. I agree that it's terrible that helpless creatures should suffer because of our ineptitude.
