Two Tuesday Twilight Thoughts

In anticipation of the third installment of the Twilight Saga movies, Eclipse, I rewatched the first movie, Twilight, and the second one, New Moon. I have to admit, if I were a serious movie critic, I couldn't say that these movies are the greatest of vampire stories. What IS great is that they have a very modern feel to them such that they have become somewhat of a cultural phenomena. Besides that, how many vampire movies out there have actually captured the hearts of both mothers and their daughters at the same time? It's also kind of interesting - perhaps even entertaining - to read the many blogs written by all these fans, young and old alike. There were even people who had countdown clocks waiting for Taylor Lautner to turn 18 in real life because they felt such a guilty pleasure about swooning over an underaged actor who bulked up his muscles to be able to play a very muscular Jacob Black. And bulk up he did!

Unlike I did before watching the first two movies, I have not yet finished reading Eclipse. I got about three quarters of the way and decided that I'm going to leave myself with the element of surprise. I am going to watch the third movie without knowing what Stephenie Meyer wrote it was going to be like.

I came across the sneak peak of the upcoming movie, however, and WOW! It's amazing how every director makes each book come to life in a very different way! Director Catherine Hardwicke took on a somewhat feminine, romanticized approach to the storyline of the first movie - allowing a "vampire" movie to be "tame" enough for parents not to worry about letting their teenaged daughters see, yet at the same time, bringing on an element that made husbands worry about their wives going to see. Then director Chris Weitz brought in more action to the New Moon movie, creating an element with the Volturi scenes and the wolf scenes that drew the attention of action-thirsty male moviegoers. And now, director David Slade appears to have taken a harder line to it and made Eclipse a very intense movie with just as much fighting and action as there is the hormonal tension of the Edward-Bella-Jacob love triangle. See for yourself:

Okay, so that's a little more than two simple thoughts. Whoever said that a dreamer like Liggy can keep things simple? Teehee...

That really does look very exciting! I have been a Twilight fan myself since I saw the movie trailer for the first film a couple of years ago, which prompted me to get started in reading the books. I just have this love of books and movies, and I tend to especially enjoy movies that are based on books! Though most of the time, I find that the books are far better than the movies, I think the Twilight films are among those rare ones that really capture the essence of the original stories. And even though there are some slight deviations from the actual events in the books, the movies still are able to bring the characters to life, just as one imagined while reading the books.

Another book series that's got me really hooked is Percy Jackson and the Olympians. I've been totally addicted to Percy since seeing the movie, "The Lightning Thief" which is based on the first book. Unlike Twilight, though, it is not a vampire romance. It is more of a fantasy/adventure for kids, about a boy hero, like Harry Potter in the HP series. The main character, Percy Jackson, is just a normal kid whose world totally changes when he discovers he is the son of a Greek god (Poseidon, the God of the Sea), and how all of a sudden he has to embrace his powers in order to save the world from imminent destruction! I hope there will be a sequel to the movie, and if all goes well, a film for all five books in the PJ series!

That sounds like a very interesting book series, Ophelia. I will have to put that on my to read list once I finally complete The Twilight Saga. (I will read Eclipse after I watch the movie so I can compare...I think I will read Breaking Dawn before the movie, though. I am anxious to know what happens next!).

I like the first movie OK. Kind of different. But it's unlikely I'll see the second movie. Even my wife didn't think it was as good.

But you've got me a bit intrigued about the third.

In general, Vampires, have run their course. Time to move to the next supernatural creature. Or maybe just back to movies about real people.

Enjoyed your post.

@ one of the guys...I think we're going to see some pretty exciting new stuff in the movies soon. Clash of the Titans looks good. Maybe we'll see more mythological characters come to life on the big screen so we're not over our necks (pardon the pun) in vampires.

Hi, Liggy! Great post, as always. Must admit I haven't seen any of the movies but I loved reading your review. Just seen Avatar myself and was disappointed...the story went it's usual way when I was hoping it would follow 'the road less travelled',,lol.

You definitealy have my click!

I read all four books, I'm kinda anal about movies that are based on books... I always try to read to books before I watch the movies (it's just not the same the other way around)

I loved all four books, I even read them twice (something I've NEVER done) The first movie was awful though. It didn't follow the story line close enough to be any good. The second movie was so much better! Who knew werewolves could be so hot?!? LOL

I am looking forward to the third movie - lots of action in that book!

You should finish the series though, the last book... well, lets just say I didn't see it coming!!

Liggy -

I haven't a clue about these movies but I am an old pain. I probably should watch at least one since I was a big fan of the Anne Rice Vampire Chronicles (the books). Nice post ... Click!

My 16 year old twin nieces in the Philippines cannot wait for the next installment. They are such huge fans. The series has a worldwide following, that's for sure!
