Two Thoughts on Art

I was going thru the news feeds on Facebook when I saw this really uniquely carved watermelon.  My first thought is it just amazes me to see how creative some people can get with the most unexpected materials.  Imagine every year we carve pumpkins for Halloween and maybe try to get really fancy with it.  But imagine carving a watermelon!  I think works like these are just awesome! 

Hunger Games Fan Art

Just as there had been a lot of fan art being shared for the Twilight movies, there are also a number of beautiful fan art being shared for the new Hunger Games movie. Here's one I like from KawaiiKarissa on the Deviant Art site.

I think this digital painting of Peeta (played by Josh Hutcherson) captures a pondersome moment from the story!

A Photoshop Job FAIL

I follow another blog called Photoshop Disasters to see the many botched up photoshop works that somehow slipped through the editing process and got published anyway.  A lot of them are really horrible, making famous models look unimaginably deformed. A lot of people submit their "finds" to the blogger page but I suppose my submission wasn't worthy of sharing...or the blogger didn't think it looked that bad...or the blogger uses T-Mobile(?!).  So I thought I'd share it here because I do some Photoshop work myself and I think this is just messed up!

I was quite excited this week to finally get to see and download the Mosaic poster that Apocalyptica was preparing for their fans. In order to be a participant, one had to be one of the first 10,000 people to submit his/her picture. You betcha I was able to make it! I LOVE Apocalyptica!!!

What's on your fridge?

This week, Blogdumps is asking us "What's on your fridge?"  I wish I could say I had a fancy built in stereo to listen to my favorite rock music tracks while I cook.  But nah...that's just not so.  I still have to turn up the volume on my living room stereo if I wanna rock out while I cook.  At least we've got the stereo system facing the direction of the kitchen and dining room so the sound comes in nice (loud) and clear.

I was gonna take a picture of my actual fridge but hehe...it's kind of a messy assortment of magnets, artwork, photos, bottle opener, grocery list, last school year's lunch menu, and whatever else my kids want to put on display.  Now that's just the sides of the fridge!

What about what's on the top of the fridge?  Hmm...do you really want to know?  Yeah, it's the hiding place for some of the candy we adults try to hide (unsuccessfully) from the kids, spare night light bulbs, the beer bottle sweaters (or sleeves - whatever you wanna call them), and the George Foreman grill my husband uses on occasion (when I'm not cooking).  It's also kind of become somewhat of a catch-all for loose ends we pick up around the kitchen area and don't get around to putting away (I blame my husband - hehehe!).

On the other hand, I'm guilty of putting stuff up there, too.  It's because I kind of like to make the top of the fridge a less inviting place for the cats to sleep on.  I love my cats but I don't like them up on the countertops or cabinet areas.  Seriously, who wants litter box paws all over the food preparation area?  Eeewww!  Besides that, the cats have other places I think they should prop themselves on (like that expensive cat tower in the family room or the nice comfy sectional in the living room).

So that's what my fridge looks like.  Let's open it up and get something to eat now.  Oh, on second thought, maybe we'll do that some other week.  LOL!

I like pictures!

I like pictures. I also like taking them. But what I like most are pictures that have such an appeal that its image is replicated, imitated, talked about, and is honored time after time. Very few pictures hold that kind of appeal. In my opinion, there is one that stands out because it embraces all those qualities.

That picture is the image painted in The Last Supper by Renaissance artist Leonardo da Vinci. The painting covers the back wall of the dining hall at Santa Maria delle Grazie in Milan, Italy. I like it so much that I chose to do research about Leonardo da Vinci for a project in 4th grade elementary.


Over the years, I've seen the image that da Vinci used in his painting replicated in other forms of art such as wood carving. In fact, I've seen many Filipino households keep a "Last Supper" painting or wood carving in their dining rooms. Must be a tradition (unless it was just in my family? Someone please let me know.)


I must say, if an image can be imitated through toys like Lego, it must be a very interesting picture indeed!

Bloggers Unite for Literacy

If you are reading my blog right now, you are lucky that you learned to read. And I'm glad you could share my passion for arts and music online through this blog. But did you realize that one in five adults in the world today does not know how to read? They may have learning challenges that were not dealt with. They may not have wanted to learn how to read. Or, they simply live in places where literacy is restricted to only certain genders or privileged few. That's sad.

Those who cannot read are missing out on the many wonderful benefits that reading brings. Reading can provide hours of entertainment that does not require electricity to do (except of course if you're wanting to read at night and don't have a lamp or candle). It is also a great way to obtain information that is valuable for making decisions about practically anything. It boosts a person's confidence. It also helps us learn more about others in the world around us, thereby bridging the communication gaps between cultures. There are countless other benefits.

On September 8, 2009, Bloggers Unite participants like me, want to raise awareness for Literacy efforts being sponsored by UNESCO. UNESCO proclaimed this day (Sept. 8th) as Literacy Day on November 17, 1965 and started celebrating it the following year. Writers get out and promote the value of literature (not just their own works). Librarians and educators dedicate more time on this day to promote literacy awareness in the schools and public libraries. Even musicians donate music and time to raise awareness of this issue, too. There's still so much more we need to do together to help more people become literate. Help others around us learn. Read to a child. Show them that books can be enjoyed just as much as their favorite video game.


Together we can do it!!!

Got Wood and Power Saw?

Now here's an artform that I haven't mentioned yet in any of my blog posts about art - WOODCRAFTS. And this guy, Randy Boni - does absolutely amazing works of art with his power saw and wood! He's an artist and craftsman from Tennessee. He does commission work for this type of art, too, and will work on-site as well. He even teaches this skill to those who request his tutoring.

I really like the details he puts into these works of art. Imagine carving such intricate lines using a power saw! That takes an amazing amount of skill and talent!

My Guardian Angel

I love to sketch but with a full-time job, a family, and a household to manage, I usually have very little time to devote to this hobby. It's been about eight months since I completed a sketch project. Last night, after spending about an hour to two hours for four nights working on this, I finished this sketch which I entitled "My Guardian Angel".



I uploaded this sketch to my redbubble site this morning so that other art lovers could see it as well. Anyone interested in my artwork can purchase cards, prints, canvas reproductions, and t-shirts with them. Check them out if you have the chance.
